| 1822 Shipwreck Cargo |
 |
The latest in that most remarkable of category of collectibles,
Chinese Cargo Ware, this is a collection of shipwreck porcelain
of superb quality, recovered in 1999.
The junk Tek Sing,
or True Star, was en route from Amoy off the mainland of China
to Java in 1822 when she hit a reef in the South China Sea between
Sumatra and Borneo, and quickly sank with the loss of more lives
than were lost from the Titanic.
For a single shipment,
the number and variety of the pieces is particularly large. There
are bowls, dishes, pouring vessels, storage jars, stoves, opium
containers and even urinals.
Most of the Tek Sing cargo was blue and white porcelain, produced
by painting the decoration onto white porcelain just before
the final firing using cobalt oxide, a method in use in China
from the 12th century to the present day.
Many of the motifs decorating the porcelain are auspicious symbols,
such as peach, fungus and lotus, representing long life, happiness,
wealth, many descendants and so on. The use of such symbols
would no doubt have helped sales of these items within China
and outside.
The quantity and quality of the Tek Sing cargo is unusual, providing
collectors with a rare opportunity to acquire Chinese porcelain
with relatively unfamiliar decoration, which originated from a
variety of producers located across the southern Chinese provinces. |
