The Art of
Ancient China
By common consent among historians, the term Ancient China spans almost 11,000 years, from 10,000 BC to 900 AD.  You will see differing descriptions of the subdivisions within this period, for instance 'in Shang times' would mean roughly the same as 'in the Bronze Age'.

The names of dynasties will also appear differently, Ch'ou sometimes being Zhou for example.  This is due to the difficulty of transliteration between totally unrelated alphabets Peking or Beijing is another instance.

Ancient China is subdivided into five eras:  Early, between 10,000 and 1500 BC, includes the Xia (Hsia) dynasties; the Bronze Age, 1500-600 BC, the Shang and Ch'ou (Zhou); the Classical Age, between 600 BC and 200 AD, the Ch'in (Quin) and Han; the Age of Division, also called the Era of Disunity, 200-600 AD, when the country was seriously divided into many dynasties including Sui, Ch'i and Ch'en; and the Early Medieval, also called the Golden Age, 600-900 AD, ruled by the T'ang dynasty.

Throughout these dynasties, and throughout the whole of the country,  many specialised visual arts flourishes, most continuing from their early flowering right up to the present.

Chinese painting, calligraphy, engraving, embroidery, macrame and paper cutting have all produced some of the best quality artworks in world history, and from the end of Ancient China into the later medieval age and the Ming dynasty, they developed the highly original and prized porcelain pottery ware that became known worldwide simply as 'china'.
