Gold Sovereigns
British gold sovereigns hold a special place within the category of coinage.  Despite the fact that the Pound Sterling had been an official unit of account for centuries, it wasn’t until 1489 in the reign of Henry VII that the first one pound coin was issued, with a very regal looking image of the seated King on the obverse, leading to the name of sovereign being applied.

Sovereigns were struck for all monarchs until 1604, in the reign of James I, when a new coin called the Unite was issued to reflect the King’s aim of bringing England and Scotland together.  The Unite was itself superceded by the Laurel in 1619 and the Guinea in 1663.

Sovereigns were struck for all monarchs until 1604, in the reign of James I, when a new coin called the Unite was issued to reflect the King’s aim of bringing England and Scotland together.  The Unite was itself superceded by the Laurel in 1619 and the Guinea in 1663.

In 1817, George III reintroduced the sovereign to coincide with the Tower Hill mint having powerful new steam presses installed.  The reverse of this coin carried an image of St George and the Dragon, from an engraving by Pistrucci, which continued on most sovereigns until 2005 when a new George and Dragon image was adopted.

During the First World War, gold bullion was needed to finance the war effort and paper banknotes were introduced in Britain for the first time.

Gold sovereigns continued to be sporadically produced by Commonwealth mints up to 1932, and some were minted but not issued in 1937 and 1953, and then the Royal Mint restarted production in 1957, using an alloy of 11/12 gold, 1/12 copper called Crown Gold, which continues to be used.
