Celebrating the
grand age of
Travel |
 |
Many people will know of Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous
observation that ‘To travel hopefully is a better thing
than to arrive …’ and he also said ‘For my
part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel
for travel’s sake.’ These quotes sum up the
attitude for many in Britain over the years – there is
as much or more interest in the journey, and the means of travel
itself, as there is in the destination.
Great ocean liners, steam trains, flying boats, touring Europe
in an open-topped car … these, and the associated images
of luxury that traditionally surround them, sum up the romance
of the so-called Golden Age of Travel, particularly in the period
between the two world wars.
With low-cost flights to almost anywhere and rather characterless
trains cris-crossing Europe, today’s travelling public
can perhaps be forgiven for taking more interest in the destination
than the travel itself, but at least there are the transatlantic
liners and cruise ships that still epitomise the luxurious and
exotic end of the travel market.
Another quote, this time from a proverb, that ‘Travel
broadens the mind’, and collecting the memorabilia of the
Golden Age will certainly do likewise, informing as well as entertaining.
Memorabilia from the time includes luggage labels, menu cards
and furnishings from the great liners; paintings, nameplates
and even the famous table lamps from Pullman railway carriages. Wicker
bar furniture from the Imperial Airways Empire flying boats and
matched luggage sets from 1930s Bentley touring cars have also
appeared in the salerooms.
