It isn’t surprising that sporting memorabilia are very
popular collectibles in a country that has a long history of
sporting involvement and success. Some collections begin
from the nostalgia of personal involvement: tickets and programmes
from a sporting event that the individual attended; maybe items
of kit from days when the game was played by the person themselves.
From such beginnings it is possible to build a collection as
deep or as broad as the individual wishes, with real or replica
trophies, caps, shirts, badges, posters, photos, bats, balls,
rackets, clubs - and then there are the associated books, newspaper
or magazine articles, films, tapes and discs. And there
are more signed items available than ever before.
Sporting signatures are of two distinct types. There are
the items with a genuine personal signature or signatures, and
those which have a reproduction of the original printed on them. The
former actegory is obviously the most valuable, especially if
it’s directly related to a famous win of some kind, but
the latter also has its value, particularly if there was a specifically
limited number produced.
The four-year cycle of such sporting events as The Olympics,
the football or rugby World Cups and so on, means that a little
judicious buying of official merchandise well in advance could
well be advantageous, certainly in comparison with world-famous
annual events such as the FA Cup, Superbowl or Wimbledon where
such opportunities are more limited.
