| Trafalgar 200 Items |
 |
The twenty-first of October 1805 – date of the greatest
naval victory in British history, off the southern coast of Spain
at Cape Trafalgar, near Cadiz. Coming at a time when Napoleon’s
land forces were winning battles on the mainland of Europe, the
success of the fleet under Admiral Lord Nelson helped to convince
Napoleon that his plan to invade Britain should be shelved.
Successive setbacks for his cause would follow, including the
disastrous Russian campaign in 1812, exile to Elba in 1814 and
then, after a brief return to power, defeat by Wellington’s
forces at Waterloo, followed by further exile to St Helena where
he died in 1815.
Nelson’s fleet had already delivered a crushing defeat
to the French naval forces at Aboukir Bay in 1798, dealing Napoleon’s
plans for foreign conquests a fatal blow, and the success at
Trafalgar sealed Nelson’s reputation as the greatest naval
tactician of the age, but at the cost of his own life.
Great military victories are fertile ground for collectors,
not only as an opportunity to obtain memorabilia from the time,
but also because the intervening years see many commemorative
items produced, such as for this year’s 200th anniversary
of the Battle of Trafalgar.
Original paintings, prints, manuscripts, letters, log-books, jewellery
and navigational instruments, furniture and figureheads from the
ships of the fleet; models of ships and other artefacts made by
the sailors and even work by Napoleonic prisoners of war have all
featured on the market over the years, joined by commemorative
items from earlier anniversaries as well as the limited editions
commissioned for this year’s bicentenary.

scene of Trafalgar
This replica of a period tankard also has a see-through
base

If the unwitting recruit drank all the beer he was said
to have accepted the shilling payment for service on one

This was called 'Taking the kings shilling' and thus tankards
came to have clear bases so revellers could lift it up
