To many, it will be a surprise to learn that Teddy Bears by
name are only just over one hundred years old – younger
than the car or the telephone. In November 1902, the US
President Theodore ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt was out hunting
bear and failed to make a kill, so his friends caught and tethered
one to provide a sitting target. Roosevelt was outraged,
saying ’Spare the bear – I will not shoot a tethered
animal!’
The Washington Post reported the story, accompanied by a cartoon
of the scene by Clifford Berryman. Within a month, Brooklyn
shopkeepers Morris and Rose Michtom were displaying a soft bear
toy in their store window, which they called ‘Teddy’s
Bear’.
So was a legend among collectibles born, although bears per
se had appeared in soft-toy catalogues since the middle of the
Nineteenth Century.
It is thought that, after a slump in the market for traditional
Teddy Bears in the middle years of the Twentieth Century, the
publication of a book entitled ‘Bear With Me’ by
the actor and Teddy Bear fanatic Peter Bull was largely responsible
for a whole new adult collectors’ market emerging.
In recent years, the resurgent market has seen the emergence
of new ‘Bear Artists’ making high quality, hand
crafted Bears in the traditional manner, and of course there
has been a succession of famous Bears over the years, from Winnie-the-Pooh
through Rupert, Sooty and Paddington to SuperTed and Pudsey for
makers to reflect in their output. |
