| The end of WWII |
 |
The Second World War formally ended with Japan’s surrender
on the second of September 1945. The end of this most destructive
international confrontation ushered in a period of social and
political change, in Britain and around the world, whose effects
are still being felt to this day. Much more than the so-called
Great War, World War II involved millions of people in many countries
across the world, either directly through occupation or enemy
attack, or indirectly through having relatives and friends sent
off to fight in distant lands.
World War II still lives on in the memories of individuals personally
caught up in it, in family histories, and in such tangible reminders
as Britain’s rebuilt town centres and the creation of ‘new
towns’ to house those from areas badly affected by bomb
damage.
The education, social and health services in Britain are also
a legacy of the conflict, not least because, during 1945 alone,
over four and a half million service men and women left the armed
forces and returned to civilian life.
Their hopes for the future were summarised by Field Marshal Montgomery
after accepting the surrender of German Forces at Luneberg Heath,
when he said: ‘We have won the war, let us now win
the peace.’
Over the past six years, there has been a succession of 60th
anniversaries from the declaration of war in 1939, through the
Dunkirk evacuations, the Battle of Britain and the D-Day landings
right through to the VE and VJ days in 1945.
All these events and more have been responsible for original
memorabilia becoming available, and for special commemorative
items being produced, so there’s now a huge amount of collectible
items out there for anyone who wants to take an interest in this
most far reaching of human conflicts.
