Art Deco is an art movement named after an exhibition held in
Paris during 1925, and the designers who are associated with
this movement produced both luxurious individual objects and
also simple shapes suited to mass production in metals, ceramics
and glass.
In the middle years of the Twentieth Century, Art Deco became
unfashinable for a while, but today almost any object even closely
resembling the style is highly collectible, and prices range
from very high for the luxury individual objects to relatively
low for the smaller mass produced items.
Art Deco glassware represents a fascinating range of collecting
opportunities, partly because the designers found highly creative
ways to use glass, which they applied to a diverse range of objects,
from vases and lamps to motor car mascots and jewellery.
Famous designers included Lalique, Galle and Tiffany whose originals
are understandably up at the high end of the price range, but
their designs have inspired many others whose work is also very
collectible – and a bit more affordable, since there has
been an upsurge of Art Deco inspired designs, which has greatly
broadened the price range for collectors.
Limited edition ranges from Czech crystal producers, in particular,
mean that attractive scent bottles and vases in the Art Deco style
can now be considered by collectors who cannot afford the prices
being reached in the auction houses by the originals.
