First, we see how the lack of priority given to night fighting capability by the U.S. Navy proved disastrous when Americans met the Japanese Navy in the waters around Guadalcanal in 1942. Then, the U.S.A.A.F. belief that its bombers could operate over Germany by day without escort fighters proved to be fatally flawed in 1943.
